Wounds, bite injuries, and swollen painful lumps

A small surface scrape may be minor, but punctures, bite wounds, and rapidly swelling painful areas often need veterinary care sooner than they look.

Wounds, bite injuries, and swollen painful lumps

Educational pet-health and visit-preparation reference. Not a diagnosis, prescription, dosage recommendation or substitute for a veterinarian.

Care & observations

  • Clip only obvious debris around the wound if your pet tolerates it safely; otherwise leave it alone.
  • Use a clean cloth for gentle pressure if there is mild bleeding.
  • Photograph the area and track swelling, drainage, odor, pain, and limping.

Seek veterinary care now

  • Heavy bleeding, deep puncture wounds, exposure of tissue, or trauma after a fight or vehicle impact.
  • Facial swelling, trouble breathing, or severe pain when the area is touched.

Contact your veterinarian soon

  • A bite wound, draining abscess, bad odor, feverish behavior, or worsening swelling within the same day.

What to avoid

  • Do not apply hydrogen peroxide repeatedly, human pain cream, or tight wraps unless instructed by a veterinarian.

MAKE YOUR OBSERVATIONS USEFUL

Bring a clear timeline to your vet

For the changes covered in this guide, note when they started, how often they happen, whether they are worsening and how they differ from your pet’s usual routine. List recent diet changes, medicines, travel or possible ingestion in time order. Add photos or a short video only when it is safe and will not delay care.
