Track trends and combinations, not one symptom
Record weekly weight, appetite, water, urine frequency, panting, waist, coat and strength. Cats may lose weight despite appetite or show vomiting and coat change; dogs may develop a pot belly, panting, increased drinking/urination or thin skin.

Put medicines and supplements on the same sheet
List steroids, ear or eye medicines, supplements and start/stop dates; some alter thirst, appetite, panting or test results. Do not stop long-term prescriptions or trial leftover medicine without the prescriber.

Same-day care for marked weakness, collapse or inability to eat
Contact a clinic the same day for sudden marked weakness, repeated vomiting, collapse, abnormal breathing, complete food refusal or suspected dehydration; coma, seizures or breathing trouble are emergencies.
