Contact before trying to grade dehydration
Promptly contact a clinic for vomiting, watery stool, markedly reduced food or milk intake, or reduced energy in a puppy or kitten; state age and weaning status. Inability to retain water, a noticeably cold body, poor responsiveness, inability to stand, collapse or abnormal breathing require immediate emergency contact. Normal skin recoil or one previous vaccine cannot exclude serious illness.

Milk-dependent young need a specific plan
A bowl of water is not a complete plan for a milk-dependent animal. Tell the clinic whether feeding is maternal or assisted, the milk-replacer product, how it is prepared and the last successful feed. Do not alter formula concentration to manage diarrhea or force-feed a weak, cold or poorly swallowing youngster; ask about safe warmth and transport while arranging care.

Record each youngster, not the litter average
- Note the last normal feed, what was actually consumed afterward (unknown is acceptable), and timing or photos of vomit and stool. For weaned animals, also note voluntary drinking. Shared food does not prove each littermate ate.
- Bring existing dated weights if available. Do not delay departure to obtain weights, samples or images. Tell the clinic before arrival if several youngsters are unwell or share a recent breeding/foster environment, and follow its arrival instructions.

Agree on the next feed and reassessment
Before the call or visit ends, confirm what and how to feed next, when reassessment is needed, and whom to contact for refusal or further vomiting. Without individual instructions, do not adopt adult fasting plans or use human electrolyte drinks or antidiarrheals. Keep the clinic’s wording and time so different carers do not each improvise a hydration plan.
